Will My Root Canal Be Expensive?

If you’re dealing with extreme tooth pain, you may be thinking that you are in need of a root canal. While you already know that root canals aren’t as painful as they are made out to be and actually relieve the pain that you are feeling, you may be worried about the impact that treatment will have on your wallet. There are several different factors that contribute to the amount that you end up paying. An emergency dentist in La Plata explains what those are.

The Location of the Affected Tooth

The amount of money that you are charged for a root canal varies a lot. There is one main factor that can determine this. According to the American Association of Endodontists, the location of the affected tooth has a lot to do with the cost of the treatment. If you have a front tooth that is infected, the cost will typically be less than if it is in the back of your mouth. This is because your front teeth only have one root, but molars can have up to three. More roots mean a more extensive procedure which ultimately leads to a higher cost.

Timing of the Treatment

If a tooth is in worse shape due to an ongoing infection, it will be more difficult for your dentist to address and treat it. That is why it is so important that you see your dentist right away if you are dealing with a persistent toothache or new or worsening sensitivity. By going to the dentist early, you may be able to avoid a root canal all together. A small cavity that would typically only require a filling can progress and cause you to need a root canal and a crown to protect it. If your tooth is damaged beyond saving and you require an extraction, this will cost even more. Ultimately, you will end up with a larger bill the longer you put it off.

Whether or Not It’s a Retreatment

The last main factor that can contribute to the cost of a root canal is whether or not the tooth has already been treated with one before. If it has been, this can make your procedure a little bit more complicated. Even if you have only a filling in the tooth, your dentist will need to drill the affected areas, so you will likely require a crown on top of your root canal.

If you’re worried about the cost of your upcoming root canal or don’t have dental insurance, talk with your dental team. They may have alternative payment options. Everyone should be able to receive essential dental care without breaking the bank. This way, you can get some relief.
